First edition. Signed and inscribed by the artist. Faber & Faber, London, 1947. First edition. Hardback. 367pp. Publisher's original yellow cloth with gilt to spine, titles on a red ground. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Inscribed on ffep by Oskar Kokoschka to Miss Jane Scott-Brown and dated 1952. (Jane Scott-Brown was a friend of the artist John Bratby who introduced her to Kokoschka). This was the first book in English about Kokoschka and the story of his life is as fascinating as his work. The author was, at the time of publication, editor of The Burlington Magazine and knew Kokoschka personally. The book contains two essays by Oskar Kokoschka and a foreword by Herbert Read. Numerous plates and illustrations, five tipped-in colour plates (including frontis.). Book condition: Very good. A little light soiling to boards. Some spotting to endpapers but otherwise internally clean and free of spotting. Dust Jacket: poor. Unclipped but generally rubbed and soiled. Some areas of loss to edges with chips and nicks.
