Flamingo, London, 2002. Book condition: very good. Very light wear. A little light spotting to top edge of text block. Internally very clean and free of marks. A beautifully written biography of Dr John Dee, a close confidante of Queen Elizabeth. Dee promoted the ideas of maths as the basis of science, anticipated the invention of the telescope, charted the New World and created one of the most magnificent libraries in Europe. Dee also seemed to posess the power of magic, as he interpreted ancient mystical texts, created potent compounds, using alchemy, performed miracles with machines and saw the future. His experiments led him to pledge everything in a Faustian pact in return for a chance to explore the spirit world himself.
