Third edition. Faber & Faber, London, 1968, third edition, first published 1935. Hardback. 198 pages plus 2 maps. Dust jacket. The original Shell Guide to Wiltshire, by the late Robert Byron, appeared in 1935. The gazetteer of parishes was revised by David Verey in 1956. The present work is longer and fuller and has been rewritten except for parts of Robert Byron's inspire introduction. Wiltshire is more than Salisbury and Stonehenge: it has matchless open downland, river valleys and woodlands, country houses and archaeological sites. The development of archaeology is, in fact, bound up with the discovery and interpretation of Wiltshire field monuments and a special article on this subject has been contributed by Anna Bacheler. Illustrated with many black & white photographs. Book in very good condition. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. Jacket generally lightly soiled and slightly discoloured. Touch of discolouration to spine.
