Quartet Books, London, 1993. First edition. Book condition: fine. Dust jacket condition: fine - unclipped and with only very slight signs of shelf wear around the edges. Pamela Cooper, the former Viscountess Ruthven, was born in 1910, one of the children of an Irish Protestant clergyman who, between the wars became chaplain to the expatriate Anglican community in San Remo. Her first husband, Patrick Hore-Ruthven, was the only son of Lord & Lady Gowrie, still warmly remembered as the war-time viceregents of Australia. Her sons are Grey Gowrie and the writer Malise Ruthven. Together with her second husband, Derek Cooper, she has had a long association with such humanitarian agencies as Oxfam, Save the Children and the International Red Cross. In the early 1980s Pamela and Derek Cooper founded Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). This is a vividly told and often moving life-story: a rich harvest of memories salvaged from the cloud of forgetting.
