Golden Cockerel Press, Twyford, Berks., 1925. Limited edition, no 256 of 450. Book condition: Good. Some bumping to corners & some light shelf wear. Foxing to endpapers and spotting to text block edges. Otherwise both volumes very clean. Grey cloth boards, quarter white buckram & gilt titling to spines. Initials by Eric Gill 'have the effect of curtains & backdrops, an appropriate way to present the text.' (History of the Golden Cockerel Press, Cave & Manson, British Library Press, 2002). Text printed in black, some blue headers and initials. Text, with modern modifications of spelling and punctuation, was taken from the Edition of 1756, printed for R & J Dodsley, in Pall Mall. Colley Cibber, colourful actor-manager, playwright & poet laureate. His 'Apology' describes his life in an anecdotal and sometimes rambling style. His poetry was widely derided at the time and he was much ridiculed as a tragic actor. His tasteless theatrical presentations and dubious business practices, together with his social opportunism led to him being widley disliked by contemporaries. He achieved ignominious fame as the head Dunce in Pope's 'The Dunciad'. A fascinating man who lived in fascinating times. This Golden Cockerel edition is a nicely produced piece of work.
