Autobiography II First edition, 1960. Hardback. viii, 326pp. Black cloth boards with gilt to spine. Top edge tinted red. Dust jacket. The second volume of John Lehmann's autobiography. He passes from the idyllic overture of peace in the Danube valley to the storm and stress of the Second World War. he paints an extraordinarily vivid picture of life in London under siege. In this setting he unfolds the story of how Leonard Woolf and he kept the Hogarth Press alive, and of the wartime continuation of his famous literary magazine 'New Writing'. There are many illuminating and entertaining glimpses of literary the life that continued to exist in London in spite of all the hazards of war. The universal struggle, and the personal struggle to discover a spiritual truth, run side by side through the crowded pages of this very individual commentary which is, at the same time, an important contribution to literary history. Some black & white photographs. Book condition very good. Minor wear only. Faint toning to endpapers and top edge colour faded. Dust jacket good. Unclipped - though the 25/- printed price scribbled over in biro. Jacket generally a little rubbed and soiled. Some edge wear and spine a little discoloured.
