Charles Robert Ashbee, founder of the Guild of Handicrafts, set up the Essex House Press in London in 1898. In 1902 he moved the press, with about 150 followers, to Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, convinced that this would be an ideal setting for creative craft work. However, it was too far from the commercial centre and from his traditional clients. The Press went into voluntary liquidation in 1908. Many of the books published by the Press appeared in fiune numbered editions - sometimes as few as fifty copies - with hand-coloured initials and decorations. Among them are the four poems reprinted in this edition. "The Deserted Village" in 1904; "Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard" in 1900; "The Eve of St Agnes" in 1900 and "Adonais" also in 1900. The originals of these works were lent by the University of London. They have been reprinted by Kingsprint of Richmond, Surrey and bound by Weatherby Woolnough of Wellingborough, Nortamptonshire. Books in near fine condition. Slipcase very good with just a little light soiling/discolouration here and there.
