Signed copy Viking, London, first published 1991. This is a fourth impression from the same year. Signed by the author to the title page. Hardback. 178pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Reflecting on what compelled him to go to Spain, Laurie Lee recalls that he wanted 'the chance to make one grand gesture of personal sacrifice and faith which might never occur again'. A Moment of War is an ironic, elegiac account of youthful idealism at the end of Auden's 'low dishonest decade'. Laurie Lee was nineteen when he left home to walk to London and then travelled on foot through Spain - to which he later returned by crossing the Pyrenees during the time of the Spanish Civil War. Illustrated with drawings. Book condition: Very good. A little dust soiling to top edge. Internally clean and bright. Dust jacket condition: very good. Price clipped. Just a little edge wear and some colour fade to the spine.
