A Masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon Art. A Facsimile. First published by The Folio Society in 2001, this edition published by The British Library, 2002. Hardback. 26pp followed by 119pages of the facsimile. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt to spine. Dust jacket. The Benedictional of St Aethelwold is one of the greatest known achievements of Anglo-Saxon art. It is a service book made by the scribe Godeman for the personal use of Aethelwold, Bishop of Winchester from 963 to 984. It contains blessings for use by Aethelwold at different church festivals, with major festivals marked with lavish illustrations in golden frames. The Benedictional is one of the most remarkable surviving products of the astonishing cultural resurgence in tenth century England, reaching a climax during the reign of King Edgar (995 - 975). Aethelwold was a central figure in this vibrant political and cultural revival, and the Benedictional encapsulates many different aspects of this precious English culture. This beautifully produced facsimile reproduces the full manuscript in colour and to actual size. The aim was to recreate the rich golds and subtle colouring of the original manuscript, printed on paper that emulates the weight and feel of vellum. For anyone with an interest in Anglo-Saxon history and culture, this volume provides a marvellous opportunity to study a masterpiece of manuscript art. Book in fine condition and with an unread feel. Dust jacket near fine and unclipped. Quite a heavy book but no additional shipping costs to UK post codes. Overseas buyers please ask for shipping costs.
