Reproduced from the Illuminated Manuscript (MS. latin 9471) belonging to the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France. First edition, 1973. Hardback. Pages 1 - 29 (Introductions), followed by plates numbered through to Pl. 127 with two successive pages of notes, then list of plates and bibliography etc on pages 43 - 247. Publisher's red cloth binding with gilt to front and spine. Top edge gilt. Original slipcase with gilt to one face and one of the illustrations to the other. Introduction by Millard Meiss, further Introduction and commentaries on the plates by Marcel Thomas. The illuminated manuscript in this book is also known as the Grandes Heures de Rohan but the arms of the Rohan family are not those of the original owner. It is most likely that the original book was produced around 1415 - 1416 and probably for an owner living in or associated with the Paris region. It is possible that the book was made for Charles, Duc de Berry who became King of France in 1422. The introductions to the book spend much time detailing the possible provenance(s) and the workmanship of its production, tracing a line to the Master of Flemalle and Jan van Eyck. Book in fine condition with little evidence of use. Slipcase near fine with just a slight amount of soiling. Quite a heavy book but no additional shipping costs to UK post codes.
