First edition First edition with slipcase. Hardback. xii, 407pp. Publisher's original brown cloth boards with gilt to spine. Colour frontis. Many illustrations, including one fold-out. Cobden-Sanderson finished his first gold-tooled bookbinding on 21st July 1884. Bookbinding is one of several arts and crafts which were greatly enriched by the talents of Cobden-Sanderson. Not only did he become a gifted designer-craftsman, after an unusually late start: he was also a well-educated man who became an energetic organiser and effective publicist for the Arts & Crafts Movement - whose name was also his invention. Of all the arts and craft, he was most interested and active in fostering those connected with his own vision of the Book Beautiful, namely calligraphy, typography and bookbinding. Loosely inserted is a card addressed to John Ehrman with greetings from the British Library Reference Division in gratitude for his Chairmanship of the Reference Division Advisory Committee. The card is signed by the Director General, the Keepers & Directors and the Secretaries. Book in fine condition. Slipcase very good with only very slight and superficial marks.
