The Porpoise Press, Edinburgh, 1931. First edition. Hardback. 160pp. Dust jacket. 8 lovely woodcuts by Freda Bone (David Bone's daughter). Captain David Bone served an apprenticeship under sail and heard the Chanties sung by the old-time seamen. He has been a lifelong student of the subject and holds strong views on the fashion of formalising these old sailor songs. In this book he prints the words and airs as they were actually sung on the wind-jammers of old. A great piece of work on sea shanties combining analysis and history with the words and music. For anyone interested in the folk tradition and sea shanties in particular this is an immensely useful book. Book condition: good. Boards generally a little soiled and corners very lightly bumped. Lacking front free end paper. Dust jacket poor but unclipped. Some areas of loss and chipping. Front separated at spine. Generally soiled and rubbed. Jacket in a protective sleeve.
