The Works of William Hogarth In a Series of One Hundred and Fifty Steel Engravings, By the First Artists with Descriptions and A Comment on Their Moral Tenedency, In Two Volumes. To which are added, Anecdotes of The Author and His works, By J. Hogarth and J. Nichols. 2 Volumes. 4to. Vol I: iv, 146pp plus 70 plates. Vol II: iv, 147 - 280pp plus plates 71 - 150. Each volume has a frontispiece followed by a vignette to the half title page (included in the plate count). Presumed contemporary binding. Black boards with half leather in burgundy and contrasting black to spines. Gilt titles and decoration to spines with decorative gilt ruling to boards. All edges gilt. Vol I includes The Rake's Progress, The Harlot's Progress, Times of the Day, Industry & Idleness, France & England, The Election, along with Beer Street and Gin Lane. Vol II includes: Hudibras, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Marriage A-La-Mode, Don Quixote together with others. All plates present and in the correct sequence. 150 steel engravings. Good. Vol I is weak at the front hinge with the board beginning to separate. Otherwise the bindings are very sound. Boards and spines generally rubbed and with some wear. Sporadic but light spotting throughout though prelims have suffered a little more. Occasional toning to paper. The two volumes are quite heavy.
